Bio

Hannah Hasan. Master Storyteller. Spoken Word Poet. Speaker.

Of Hannah Hasan’s greatest gifts is her ability to see people and to understand the power of community. Those two factors influence every poem and every story that she writes, every class and workshop that she facilitates, and every speech that delivers. The awards and acknowledgments, fellowships and residencies, grants, and gifts that she has received as a result of that work; are all reflections of her belief in the power of people and the beauty of community.

In 2023, Hannah received the prestigious Founders Award from the Arts and Science Council. This award serves as an acknowledgment of Hannah’s many contributions to the arts and culture ecosystem in Charlotte, NC. This includes over sixteen years of writing and performing custom thought-provoking and story-centered poems for nonprofit organizations; social justice-centered events, protests, and vigils; colleges and universities, corporations, government agencies, and more. This award also celebrated Hannah’s work as the Co-Founder of Epoch Tribe, where she serves as a producer and writer of a powerful collection of groundbreaking storytelling productions that feature the true stories of real people and real communities shared live on stage.

In 2021, Hannah was honored to be chosen as a Hermitage Fellow, where she joined the ranks of some of the greatest artists of our time. In addition to celebrating her work as a poet and theatre maker, this honor highlighted Hannah’s unique gift as a creative facilitator and speaker who uses the power of story to connect and empower communities.

Hannah has worked with many individuals, groups, organizations, schools, and corporations in her career. She has given her time and talent– in kind, often. She is a mentor and guide for many. She is a product of her environment; and finds herself at the intersection of various identities. A Black, Muslim woman from the south who has often felt on the outside of things, while seeking to navigate impacting the world from the inside.

A poet, playwright, and biographer; a storytelling guide, a writer, and a producer of prolific works of performance art; Hannah Hasan is her own beautiful story.

Testimonials

Hannah helped me out a lot with my story. I was just in the beginning stages, but she was able to help me figure out what direction to take my piece, and she made me feel like I was writing something worth hearing. I felt very comfortable talking to her, and she was very honest with me. She gave me constructive, helpful feedback, an action plan, and the affirmation I needed to write and perform something that I’m proud of. I’m not kidding.
— Eli Beck, Brown University
Hannah is one of the most talented writers and most compassionate people I know. When I needed someone who could coach inexperienced writers on how to identify a story, craft a powerful personal narrative and perform it in a meaningful way, she was the first person I thought to reach out to. Writing about experiences with masculinity and the way it harms people, is a delicate process and Hannah helped my students through it with ease. I was amazed by the power of the finished products. I’d recommend Hannah to anyone in need of writing and/or performance coaching.
— Marc Peters, Men's Health Coordinator at Brown University
Hannah Hasan is a masterful storyteller and slam poet. I have seen and worked with alot of artists over the years, and Hannah is hands down at the top of my list. Her ability to empower, facilitate, educate, guide, and support individuals and groups as they learn to tell their story, or dip their toes in the slam poetry waters is unparalleled. I can’t recommend her highly enough and know that when you work with Hannah, magic happens.
Hannah, I’ve been thinking about you for the last three days. I so admire and appreciate you. Your listening skills are - I can’t even find the word - amazing, excellent, admirable. You gave your whole self to us.
— Class Participant
I also appreciate your process. Friday evening I was thinking “I don’t think I remember the details of my life well enough to narrate it.” But because of your process I was able to remember critical life moments and choose the moment that best reflected my why. Smooth.

The class was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and then of course Saturday night was something the community had not experienced before - and they want more!
— Class Participant
Quite honestly, Hannah is the epitome of a creative. With little direction she created the most heartfelt, true and powerful poem. And then, effortlessly, performed it live for us and stole the show. When you need to put power to an idea or bring a concept to life look no further than Hannah!
— Kelly Brooks, ED Share Charlotte
I cried listening to your words about fault lines. The history of Charlotte, neighborhoods- people!! Forgotten people. Forgotten black people.
I love seeing you in important work in our community!
